Brief History of Normandy Isle & Shores

Normandy Isle is a Miami Beach neighborhood located on an island in Biscayne Bay. The Tequesta Indians used the island as a fishing and hunting ground when it was first settled. The island was purchased in the early twentieth century by a developer named Carl G. Fisher, who intended to build a luxury residential community on the island. Fisher envisioned Normandy Isle as a European-style village with a central square and a network of canals for residents to travel by boat.  The development began in the 1920s and included a mix of Mediterranean and Art Deco-style homes, as well as several commercial buildings and public spaces. The Normandy Plaza, a central square with a park and a shopping district, was the community’s focal point. During WWII, the United States military occupied a large portion of the island and used it as a training ground for soldiers. Following the war, the island was returned to civilian use, and the community thrived. The fortunes of Normandy Isle declined in the 1960s and 1970s, as many of the original residents moved away and the island fell into disrepair. However, the community began to revive in the 1990s, with many of the original homes and buildings being renovated and restored. Normandy Isle is now a thriving and diverse community with a mix of residential and commercial properties, as well as a number of public parks and recreational areas. The neighborhood is known for its beautiful architecture, vibrant culture, and proximity to Miami Beach’s beaches and other attractions.
