Summer is not over yet here in Miami and it isn’t too late to take the kids out on a nature trip in one of the best kept preserve in Miami Dade. The Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center is located at 22301 SW 162 Avenue. It is a 112-acre park and preserve wide enough for so many programs offered for adult and kids alike for an educational and fun encounter with the nature.
The Castellow Hammock Preserve and Nature Center opened in 1974 as one of the first environmental education centers in Miami-Dade County and is named after James S. Castellow, the earliest citrus farmers in Florida. The park is popular among the naturists for bird watching, camping, nature trail and more. A tropical hardwood forest covers most of the park, and a half-mile self-guided nature trail offers visitors a view of the forest interior. Species observed in the park are over 120 bird species, 70 butterfly species, raccoons opossum, gray squirrels, flying squirrels, fox, reptiles and amphibians and more. The nature center is an indoor classroom where preserved floras and faunas are displayed. The resident naturalists offer classes and workshops for nature awareness and park staff offers guided EcoAdventure tours for a close encounter with the nature, including canoe trips, kayak fishing excursions, biking and more. Camping is also offered at the park with fire certified staff for the safety of the campers.
