Memorial Day, the South Florida Way
On the last Monday of May the United States celebrates Memorial Day. What does Memorial Day really meant? Indication the start of summer, street parties, cook-outs, and family get-together? But it is more than that. It is a special day in honor of those who traded their precious life with the freedom that we have.
Memorial day is a commemoration of the brave men and women who served the Nation. Informal ceremonies were celebrated at the grave of the soldiers. On May 1868, the Grand Army of the Republic established May 30 as Decoration Day by decorating the grave of the fallen soldiers with flowers and offering prayers and hymns.. It was only after World War I when Decoration Day became Memorial Day in remembrance to the Americans heroes who bravely fought to bring freedom. It is declared to be a national holiday celebrated on the last Monday of May.
